Let me tell you my personal story how I got into sales… and how naïve I was to think success was going to be fast and easy. I’ve never told this to anyone in the detail I’m about to share it with you.

A time long ago, I worked for a grocery store chain. I had been working there for years as a checker and a liquor department manager. The job included working long three-day weekends, evenings and holidays. Many times I worked on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Easter and I missed many important family gatherings as a result.

It was a job that paid the bills and I relied on the income. You know the feeling.

One afternoon, I had just unloaded a huge pallet of wine, spirits and beer. I was stocking the shelves, filling beer coolers, and building product displays.

Needless to say, after all that physical labor I was sweaty, filthy and tired.

For at least the hundredth time since running this department, I watched as a sales representative came in from one of the beverage distributors. She approached me to kindly ask if I would order product for a store display. She comfortably told me about the special product, gave me the profit margins, and assured me the product would sell quickly. So I happily said yes and placed my order.

She had just made a very profitable sale and she did it in a five-minute conversation.

Selling looked so easy!

I was enticed by the appearance of the sales reps. They wore nice clothes and appeared cool and completely rumple-free. I on the other hand, was imprisoned in a scratchy, polyester uniform, scuffed tennis shoes and had to punch a time clock.

The sales reps were calm, collected when they strolled in and I was jealous of their freedom and ability to be ‘in the field’.

I never forgot this feeling and just a few months later I saw my opportunity to join the ranks of sales rep… even if it was at a lowly entry position. I was excited and apprehensive to get out of my comfort zone and become a sales representative with a major beer distributor.

Never in my wildest dreams did I know where it would actually take me 25 years later!

That first step into the world of sales was my ticket to freedom! Or so I thought until the reality of the situation hit me.

I had been hired into a nearly all male sales team for a beer distributor. Many of them had been in sales for years and I was the new gal on the block and totally ignorant about how to sell as a true sales professional.

During my interview process, three managers simultaneously quizzed me on my qualifications (or lack thereof). They informed me of a contest within the sales team that had been going on for three months and would conclude at the end of the year. The winner received an award for “Salesperson of the Year”.

I told them, “If you hire me, I’ll win that Salesperson of the Year award.” Their faces expressed surprise and then amusement. They reminded me the contest had already started months ago.

I don’t know what possessed me to make such a commitment to them, but I think it’s what got me the job.

By the time I got home from that interview, the phone was literally ringing as I walked in the door. It was one of the managers calling to inform me that the sales job was mine.

Later I realized that I actually made my first sale during that interview! Selling is not just about moving products. It’s also about positioning yourself and confidence is an essential component of the selling process.

But confidence was the last thing I had in those early days as a sales rep. It was bad enough that I had the pressure to perform well, but because of my big mouth I also had to now outperform 20-year sales veterans to win Salesperson of the Year. Geez! Was I nuts?

Luckily, a short conversation (that could have easily turned into an argument) with a new colleague during my very first day on the job gave me the motivation I needed to learn how to outperform, outsell, and crush my sales competition.

My first day at my new sales position, a sales rep (I’ll call him Bob) introduced himself and told me details of the Salesperson of the Year contest. I listened with much interest (after all, I did tell my managers I would win that contest if they hired me). I had my pride at stake! So I asked Bob more questions about the contest hoping I could glean something to help me figure out a strategy to at least look like I had a chance.

Instead of answering my questions and taking me seriously, Bob immediately dismissed me as not being qualified to compete or even win.

Bob chuckled condescendingly and told me I didn’t stand of a chance of winning Salesperson of the Year. Bob further informed me that even if I did give it shot, it was hopeless because some other hot shot sales rep was already blowing away the competition… and he had been doing it for the last three months!

"His Remark Was a Stinging Slap
In the Face But It Motivated Me To Figure Out
How to Succeed In Sales"

Bob’s remark felt like a stinging slap to my face. His remark not only sparked anger in me, but it created a desire so strong in my soul that nothing could have stopped me from what I was about to achieve in the next nine months.

I set out on a crash course of learning the hard way how to succeed at face to face and over the phone sales. As crushing as it felt, I did not let prospects telling me ‘No’ stop me from asking for the sale again and again.

I faced rude and indifferent prospects with a confident smile, even though inside I felt frustration and disappointment. There were more nights than I care to admit where I cried-in-my-soup and I felt absolutely whipped from hearing so many ‘Nos’.

Have you ever felt that way? So passionate about your desire to succeed but lost not knowing how on earth you were going to achieve it?

Well, one of those evenings when I was having my own private pity-party and questioning my whole decision to go into sales, I thought back to my days as a liquor department manager at that grocery store.

I recalled with clarity the sales rep I told you about earlier who easily sold me her new product line of beverages.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks!

She did not sell me!

She had a CONVERSATION with me!

She asked about me and how things were going. Then guess what she did?

She LISTENED to me!

As I recall I told her that beverage sales were slow and she offered her new product line as a way to boost our sales… which it did! I remember feeling happy making the decision to buy her products and she was happy too.

Could it really be that simple? Could the secret to selling successfully be as easy as having a conversation with my prospects?

What if I actually started listening to my prospects and learned more about their problems and challenges?

What if I really understood their needs, then I figured out which of my products would solve their problem and offered it as the solution? Wouldn’t they be as happy as I was when the beverage sales rep showed me how to bring more revenue into my grocery store?

That’s the moment everything changed for me and the very next day I started closing on sales left and right.

I started having conversations with my prospects and listening to what their needs were. I learned how to develop a relationship and offer value to them before I asked for anything from them.

I learned to view a sale as a process rather than a one-time event.

This was a major shift for me and it is what I call the ‘consultative selling process’. The great thing is if you know how to have a conversation (which I know you do!) then you can easily learn the steps and skills to excel at consultative selling.

I experienced a major learning curve as I made this transition and I can give you some great time saving tips so you close sales even faster than I did.

I persevered, overcame many mistakes, and began enjoying the process so much that I jumped out of bed each day eager to try out my new skills (really, I arrived at the warehouse at 6:00 in the morning to talk to my delivery driver!). I began opening new accounts, selling new products, expanding product lines, and selling beer like crazy.

And guess what else happened…

I won Salesperson of the Second Quarter, the Third Quarter and the Final Quarter… which led to winning Salesperson of the Year! Even though my colleagues had a 3 month head start over me and I had to figure out sales on my own, I set new sales record and became THE ONE who no one could keep up with!

It was the beginning of a love relationship with the entire sales process. It is something I am passionate about and I have spent years teaching and training other business owners, sale representatives, network marketers, and phone selling professionals how to do successfully.

"Two Simple Secrets To Selling

Here are two of my sales secrets to making multiple sales repeatedly.

Using the consultative selling process, I ALWAYS asked for the sale.     2% of Sales are made on the 1st contact

    3% of Sales are made on the 2nd contact

    5% of Sales are made on the 3rd contact

    10% of Sales are made on the 4th contact

    80% of Sales are made on the 5th to 12th contact

Do you see that? 80% of sales are made NOT on the first, second, third, or even fourth try! Most sales are made on (or after) the 5th time you call or contact your prospect!

Compare this to what sales people are doing:

    48% of sales people NEVER follow up

    25 % of sales people make follow up contact a 2nd time and stop

    12% of sales people make follow up contact a 3rd time and stop

    10% of sales people make follow up contact more than 3 times

According to these statistics, 10% of the sales professionals are making 80% of the sales!!

Clearly I was one of those 10% who knew the secret of following up more than 3 times! In fact, I turned my follow up into an easy part of the sequence I use throughout my consultative selling process. It feels natural and my clients have grown accustomed to my friendly follow up.

Your follow up with your prospects can take many forms and it should. You can meet in person, make a phone call, email, fax, or send a note through the regular mail. Using a variety of formats is important.
